English: A Christmas shearwater (Puffinus nativitatis) on Cook Islet, Kiritimati, Line Islands, Kiribati.
Original field note from author: Back before 1983, these lovely black seabirds densely populated the ground cover of Kiritimati's Closed Area islands. At eventide, many thousands of them would stream in black lines from the open sea back to land after a day's fishing. They still remain, but in much smaller numbers. |
